Kayla Ewell Interview

June 2011
by Liza Rae (@Miss_LizaRae) & Melissa Dunn (@Vamp_Diaries)

Liza Rae:  Who are you closest with out of the entire cast of Vampire Diaries?

Kayla Ewell:
That’s actually really hard to say! Because I’m close with so many different people, in many different ways! I’d have to say that I’m naturally closest with Nina [Dobrev], because she and I used to live together. When you live someone, you really know pretty much everything about them. There’s just no way that you cant. As far as the guys go; I’m closest with Zach [Roerig]. When someone plays your brother, you kind of take on that relationship in real life. It’s so nice to have guy friends, to get their opinion on things. Candice [Accola] is also one of my best friends, I can honestly tell her anything.

LR: So you and Nina [Dobrev] lived together back during the filming of season one?

KE: Right, when we first moved to Atlanta GA, before we starting shooting. You know when you first move to a new city, you don’t know anything there, or any of the people you just do everything with your roommate, because that is what’s comfortable. Its really more of a sisterly relationship between Nina and I, then it is a friendship.

LR: Do you think that Vicki and Anna were brought back just to confuse Jeremy, or that they really are alive and in the flesh?

KE:
Honestly? I have no idea! (laughs) We haven’t started shooting yet, we haven’t even gotten the script for the first episode yet! That’s something that’s so fun about TVD, that’s what makes the show so good; the audience is always so shocked by everything that happens. Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec] have done such a good job at keeping everything from us! They don’t tell us anything, and then we get the script and we’re shocked by what’s happening. It’s really, quite possibly one of the best shows I’ve ever been on, because I’m constantly surprised by the story lines. I mean, there is just so much that happens in just one episode, and I just think they do such a good job of surprising everyone, the actors included.

LR: What did you miss most from set when you left in season one?

KE:
Everything! I really missed everything, mostly all the people. I just love the city of Atlanta, the freedom of being able to act, and be on a wonderful show amongst wonderful, fellow actors. Really just not having to be in Hollywood with all the hype and everything. It really was kind of amazing to be in a smaller city where…no one really cares who we are, when we’re in Atlanta! Which is really kind of wonderful, because people can suddenly get on the show and if your in New York or LA or other cities, it can kind of get to your head. But that hasn’t happened to anyone on the show because I really believe that everyone keeps each other in check! Being in a smaller city really humbles you, a little bit. I really just missed working on the show! You know? TVD is a show I would watch even if I wasn’t on it. So to be able to be on a show like that is just…really like a dream come true, you know? Of all the shows I’ve done, this is a show where I’ve really developed friendships that have lasted whether I was still on the show, or not. It was really hard being with those guys 24/7, to moving back to LA. Its so much harder to have a relationship over the phone. So we were calling each other all the time, but our schedules were different, and the time change made it so difficult. They were doing night shoots, so they were working at night and sleeping all day, and it really became more and more complicated, so it’ll be nice to be with them again, and establish the relationships that we all had in the beginning, you know? Oh! And the food! Probably the best food ever.  [Laughs] Also, there's a mentality that southerners have about just chilling out on Sundays, and relaxing together, enjoy life, and be kind to others. I mean, I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California… so it’s a very different mentality, and I really, really enjoyed it. It really changed me, and who I am as a So, Ive taken a lot of that southern mentality and infused it into my LA life, and its created a wonderful combination for me. I will never forget that phone call that I received from Kevin [Williamson]. Saying that they were going to kill me! It was probably one of the worst days of my life, ever! It was just so hard and shocking because I knew that Vicki died in the book, but I didn’t know if they were going to follow that story line. So to have it happen so soon was horrible, and really sucky. I was crying and Kevin was crying, and Marcos [Siega] was there with me during the phone call, and he gave me the biggest hug…it was the worst thing in the world. Its one of those things where, when your going through it, it’s the worst thing ever, but looking back on it, I can see that it wasn’t so bad. But now I can appreciate it again, and be back on the show, so its all good! That’s a great thing about the show… that they can bring anybody back. Now you just never know, once someone dies, they’re just not dead sometimes! [Laughs]

Melissa Dunn: It is so nice that you are on Twitter now, because there were a lot of fake ones of you!

KE: Yea, I had heard that! I had called Michael [Trevino], Candice, Zach, and Nina and said “Can you guys please give me a shout out, so that people know that this is actually me?” And they said “Oh, of course!” So I’m really grateful for that because…imposters are not cool. I am so obsessed with Twitter now! It’s so addicting, and now I’m always on it, It’s so fun! It’s such a great way for fans to get in contact with whoever they want, it’s wonderful! I feel like I can actually have a personal relationship with the fans. No other type of media allows that. It has been every eye opening for me.

LR: What character did you originally audition for?

KE: I went out for Vicki. They sent me the script, I read it, and honestly, I really loved Vicki! She’s just such a bad girl. She is the total opposite of who I am. Its so fun to play something that I am not! I will never be a “druggy” type. I had horrible butterflies when I went for the audition. Candice and Zach (Roerig) were both there, so Candice and I got to team up and it was so great! It was me, Zach and Candice who got to fly over to Atlanta together, so it was really awesome! Candice and I are sitting in first class, and I hear this voice, I look behind me and it’s Diane Keaton! That was the coolest thing in the world! We told her about the show, and she promisd that she would check it out! [Laughs]

MD: What was it like guest starring on Entourage?

KE:
It was so fun! That show is exactly what everyone thinks Hollywood is like. I just think Adrian Grenier is so cute! All the guys were great. I remember it was raining and Kevin Connolly came over to my trailer with and umbrella and said “Hey, Ill walk you to set!” So yea, all the guys were really cute. It was a really fun set to be on. I feel like sets are either really fun to be on, and everyone has a ball, or they are absolutely awful and your just there for the job. I feel like it really is one way or the other. I’ve been pretty lucky! Most of the sets I’ve been on have been fun. Everyone is amazing on Vampire Diaries.

LR: Fans I’m sure, would like to know what it is like to work with Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder; they are so cute! How can you focus!?

KE: [Laughs] I absolutely agree with you! That was one of the hardest things in the beginning! I used to watch Lost, and I was obsessed with Boone! He was so hot! When I heard that Ian [Somerhalder] was cast for Damon, I was so excited! When I read the scene where we are dancing around in our underwear I was like yes, I have the best job in the world! [Laughs] I get paid to dance in my underwear with Ian Somerhalder? Wow. But that’s the thing about Ian, he is just so wonderful, and accepting and loving of anyone, that he truly is amazing on the inside. Same with Paul [Wesley], who is so insanely quiet, and intense I never know what to talk about with him! He’s such a good guy too.

MD: Were you involved with any of the ‘Matt Davis” pranks that went on around set?

KE:
I had left by the time that all started! Everyone would call me on the phone to tell me about them and I could barely understand them because they would be laughing so hard! That would happen all the time! [Laughs]

LR: Do you think that Vicki will have any unfinished business with Tyler [Lockwood]?

KE:
I hope so! The last time they were together on the show, they were normal people. Neither of them were a vampire or a werewolf yet. There are so many different ways they can go. I know that Kevin and Julie, whatever they end up writing, will make it absolutely amazing. They are just so good at what they do. That’s the thing about Vicki coming back, there are so many unfinished business between her and Jeremy, and Matt. I had a conversation with Kevin [Williamson], and if anything happened that he told me, it’ll be crazy!  They’ve always written the show so that it is so unpredictable.

LR: Who do you think Jeremy will pick between Vicki, Anna and Bonnie?

KE:
Honestly? I don’t know! I think he is really lucky, because all three women are beautiful and really love him. He’s like the Ultimate Bachelor! [Laughs] Each girl is so different! I think it’ll be interesting to see two vampires and a witch all against each other, it’ll be the ultimate bitch fight! [Laughs] Malese Jow is so talented! I think we both kind of felt the same admiration and respect for each other. She’s so professional and very grounded. I hope we have a lot more to do together!

Kayla Ewell
"Vicki Donovan"

Although Kayla Ewell’s character, Vicki Donovan, was only in Nine Episodes of ‘The Vampire Diaries’, Vicki has had a big effect on the show, especially on Jeremy. Vicki was killed in Episode Seven “The Haunted” by Stefan, after being turned into a vampire by Damon.
Kayla was born in Long Beach, California and raised in Seal Beach. She studied dance, singing, and acting at the Orange County Song & Dance Company in Westminster. She was spotted by a talent agent while taking an acting class in 1999, and was asked to go on an audition. She graduated from Los Alamitos High School in 2003.
Kayla first appeared on the television series “Freaks and Geeks” in 2000, playing Maureen Sampson in the episode "Carded and discarded", directed by Judd Apatow. She starred on the soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful” from 2004-2005, and has guest-starred on the TV series “The O.C.”, “Boston Public”, “Veronica Mars”, “Close to Home” and “Entourage”. She had a role in the film “Just My Luck”, starring Lindsay Lohan, and in “Material Girls”, starring Hilary and Haylie Duff, in 2006. She had a starring role in the film “Senior Skip Day”. Kayla was just on an episode of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”.
Kayla co-starred in The CW television series “The Vampire Diaries” for the first Seven Episodes in 2009. She described her character, Vicki Donovan, to Star magazine as "a really slutty high school student", and "a troublemaker". Vicki was the first human on the series turned into a vampire. Kayla performed a death scene where Stefan aka Paul Wesley staked her character in the heart in order to save Elena aka Nina Dobrev in the Halloween-themed Episode "The Haunted". She hinted in November 2009 that she was still under contract for the role and might return to the show. Series creator Kevin Williamson however stated that there were no plans to bring her back.
As of 2009, Kayla lives in Los Angeles, California. She stated to Sophisticate magazine in 2005 that she enjoys painting, rock climbing, and rappelling in her free time, she also includes dancing and whitewater rafting among her hobbies. She was on her high school's surfing team. Kayla dated actor Kellan Lutz for two and a half years, recently she described her relationship status as "totally single" to Star magazine in October 2009.
