Mia Kirshner

Isobel Fleming

Mia Kirshner was born on January 25, 1975 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to the parents of Etti & Sheldon Kirshner.  Mia’s grandparents were actually survivors of the Holocaust. Mia’s father was born in Germany in 1946, in a displaced persons camp and met Mia’s mother, a Bulgarian Jewish refugee, in Israel. Mia also has a younger sister.

Mia studied Russian Literature and 20th century movie industry at McGill University in Montreal. Since the beginning of her career, she has participated in several series and movies, playing characters with complicated psychological profiles.

Isobel Fleming

Isobel Fleming is the wife of Alaric Saltzman and the biological mother of Elena Gilbert. She first appeared on the show when Alaric began to remember the last moments spent with her. These flashbacks show a woman studying paranormal psychology (the existence of supernatural beings). Isobel left Alaric one sudden day because life just wasn’t exhilarating enough with him. Alaric came home one day to find Isobel being fed on by a vampire, and which he disappeared with her body. To Alarics knowing, Isobel was dead, but her body was never found. That is until Damon told Alaric what really happened to Isobel.  Isobel loved Rick she just wasn’t satisfied with her life with him. She needed more; she needed to be a vampire.

One night after Alaric did some research, Damon and Alaric went to a home to see if Isobel or another vampire occupied it. They were a bit discouraged to find out it was occupied to a male vampire from the tomb. Later that night Alaric set off to the Mystic Falls Grill for a few drinks when he is suddenly stunned at the return of his undead, dead, vampire wife. Isobel’s return was more impressive than expected. She returns as a domineering, cold-hearted, no care for human life person with no redeeming qualities. Instead of comforting Rick, she demands him to set up a meeting with her daughter, Elena. Isobel’s’ return was planed and meticulous. Her only purpose in coming to Mystic Falls was to obtain Jonathon Gilberts invention, which we found out later in that episode was actually a weapon against vampires. This device was supposed to be used against the tomb vampires and by Isobel’s decision, the Salvatore brothers as well. Once she obtained the device, Isobel left town again. Hopefully, we will see more of Isobel in season 2; maybe she can actually work out a relationship with her daughter Elena, whom she gave up at birth.
